Greek Salad; The Best of Both Worlds

The concept of eating salads before meals was first encouraged by the Greek philosopher, Hippocrates. He believed that eating veggies before meals was a good way to clear the digestive tract and make digestion of the main meal easier on the body. It comes as no surprise then, that to this day, Greece has a universally recognized salad of its own; Greek Salad.

Today, we eat salads as stand-alone meals or side dishes.

The standard Ghanaian salad contains lots of mayonnaise, eggs, baked beans, tuna (or even corned beef); the whole shebang! Delicious? Yes! But not exactly what you’re looking for if you want to watch your figure!

If you’re looking for a salad that is both yummy and healthy by all standards, then who better to look to than the people who invented salads in the first place?!

A standard Greek Salad treats you to a medley of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, Feta cheese and of course, olives.

Black and green olives contain vitamin E and antioxidants which are known to help lower the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer. What is more, they contain healthy fat. They are practically a bite-sized balanced diet all on their own!

Feta cheese is what I like to call the cheese cheat-sheet. It’s nice and creamy and at the same time low in fat. As if that isn’t enough, it’s rich in B vitamins, phosphorous, calcium, good bacteria and fatty acids. Who doesn’t love a cheese you can enjoy without the guilt of extra calories!

Now throw in those tomatoes, cucumbers and onions and you know this salad is too good to miss out on! Our very special Bourbon House Café Greek Salad recipe comprises both green and black olives, Feta cheese, tomatoes, onions, cucumber as well as lettuce and green pepper for that added Ghanaian twist.

Looking back to the Greeks, the English word “salad” originally came from the Latin “sal” which literally means “salt”. This is because salt was the dressing used in those days. The Grecian peeps understood that a good salad is all about the dressing and we at Bourbon House Café believe same!

This is why our already otherworldly Greek Salad comes dressed in a tangy vinaigrette or any other dressing of your choice!

Between its mouth-watering Feta cheese and disease-busting olives, Greek Salad really is the best of both worlds!

Bourbon House New Branch

My Su Experience

I would like it to be known that this was not my first time at a Bourbon House Café. In fact, I swear by their club sandwich and fries. Fun fact : if I were on death row and had to pick a last meal before my execution, I would order their club sandwich with fries and a white chocolate milkshake. Trust me, I have put A LOT of thought into it.

Now you can see why I was excited to try out the newest Bourbon House Café branch in the Su Tower building at Ridge. I must admit, I was a little nervous because I knew there was a possibility this experience could ruin Bourbon House Café for me.

I wondered if I would have any trouble finding them in the Su Tower because that building is MASSIVE. I was not really looking forward to the possibility of an elevator ride as I am slightly claustrophobic. But as usual, the people at bourbon house café showed me that they really do have everything handled. Because alas, the Su Tower branch is located on the ground floor of the building. It is so visible from the parking lot that even Stevie Wonder could find it.

I entered to find a very welcoming staff. They were so welcoming, attentive and engaging that I began to wonder if they had been wrongly informed that I was royalty. The ambience was perfect with nice clean white tables and comfortable seating. I was not surprised to find a party of about eight people just catching up over food. My server Seth led me to a table and promptly handed me the menu to peruse. Even though I knew exactly what I wanted to order, I decided on a whim to look at the menu anyway. In the timeless words of my favourite song by TLC “ please don’t go chasing waterfalls, stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to”. Usually I would take this advice but I decided to see what happens when one goes chasing waterfalls. Therefore I decided to try something new. I ordered a plate of Jerk Chicken with a side of fries and a white chocolate milkshake.

My milkshake arrived as promptly as I had ordered it and my food followed shortly after. I think I had a tear in my eye after I took the first bite. The food was THAT good.  The fries were the right amount of crispy and salty. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The chicken pieces were flavourful, spicy and tender. The jerk chicken completely transformed the fries into exciting spicy sticks. And when things got too heated in my mouth, my milkshake did a wonderful job of restoring peace to my palate.

In all this, guess who forgot she had no cash on her? I was fully ready to be escorted to the kitchen by Seth and be given an apron to wash some plates. But the Bourbon house café staff saved the day by informing me they accepted payments via mobile money. (They take card payments too BTW). My relief was palpable. Indeed, not all heroes wear capes, sometimes they work at Bourbon House Café.

I went chasing waterfalls and discovered this awesome Jerk Chicken and fries combo. The Lesson here is Bourbon House Café is awesome. The only new thing about this Bourbon House Café branch is the location. It’s still the same great food and same amazing staff.

Fifty Shades of Coffee

Coffee: All You Need to Know and More

Today, we delve into the deep dark world of coffee and the first thing that comes to mind is “The Coffee Song” by Osibisa. And if you don’t know it, you probably aren’t old enough to be drinking coffee anyway!

What you may know however, irrespective of how young you are, is that Brazil is the home of the coffee bean as well its lead exporter.

However, starting with the Italians, lots of other countries have done some pretty cool things with coffee beans over time and today almost everyone has their go-to coffee favourites. But just in case you don’t have one yet, here’s a list to help you pick.

The Espresso

An espresso is a type of coffee beverage made by forcing water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans.  This brewing method extracts all the flavour from the coffee beans, resulting in a concentrated, intense and full-bodied cup of coffee. Because of how rich it is, the espresso serves as the base for almost all other coffee drinks.

The term espresso is the Italian word for “fast”, and the espresso machine was invented, as its name suggests, to provide people with a cup of coffee, fast!

So think of an espresso in these terms, dark, rich and intense (so kinda like Denzel Washington but found on the Bourbon House Café menu) and served to you in record time.

Americano

Shortened from the Italian “Caffè Americano” which literally means “American Coffee”, this is a type of coffee drink prepared by diluting an espresso with hot water, giving it a similar strength to, but different flavour from traditionally brewed coffee.

There is a popular, but unconfirmed, belief that the name has its origins in World War II when American G.I.s in Italy would dilute espresso with hot water to approximate the coffee to which they were accustomed.

An Americano is basically an espresso but with less character so perhaps the coffee version of President Trump?

Cappuccino

Cappuccino bucks the trend. It comes from an Italian word that refers not to coffee, but to friars. When the cappuccino drink was first introduced in Italy, it was named after the Capuchin friars because the colour of the espresso mixed with frothed milk was similar to the colour of the Capuchin robe.

Essentially, an espresso-based coffee drink, it is traditionally prepared with double espresso and steamed milk foam.

So basically a Cappucci-no is twice as potent as the espresso but with steamed milk foam? Sounds like a Cuppucci-yes to me!

Macchiato

The Macchiato is an espresso coffee drink with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. In Italian, macchiato means “stained” or “spotted” so the literal translation of caffè macchiato is “stained coffee”, or coffee with a spot of milk.

Get yourself a caffè macchiato, and you’ve almost gotten yourself a 101 Dalamations, except their swimming around…in a cup…and steaming hot!

Café Latte

The term as used in English is “latte” which is a shortened form of the Italian “caffè latte”. It is a combination of espresso and steamed milk. The French equivalent to a “latte” is a “grand crème”.

We know you already probably love yourself a lot but at Bourbon House Café, we go the extra mile – we love you a LATTE!

Latte Macchiato

First, in a latte macchiato, espresso is added to milk, rather than milk to espresso as in a caffè latte. Also, a latte macchiato is often a “layered” drink, rather than a mixed one, as with a caffè latte. Simply, in a caffè latte, the emphasis is on the coffee, while in a latte macchiato, the emphasis is on the milk.

So this is basically a latte but made in reverse. Speaking of reverse how’s that reverse Shaku Shaku coming along?

Now that you know which coffee is which, you are fully equipped to try any of them at out Labone or East Legon locations whenever you need a pick me up during the day or need fuel to start your day!

Breakfast options that exist in a café in Ghana

For a lot of people, breakfast is the best part of their weekday. Because, how else do you cheer up after waking up at an ungodly hour to get to that job that doesn’t pay you enough or to another endless day of class? Over the weekend, it provides an avenue to catch up with friends and family while savouring the delicious free time ahead.

We do realize the importance of breakfast to you not just nutritionally but also socially. That is why, at Bourbon House Cafe, our breakfast menu is carefully curated to suit a wide variety of tastes and both our locations are designed to provide the perfect ambience for you, your friends and family. So whether you like your eggs sunny side up or scrambled, or you want to eat alone or with friends we have got you covered.

Speaking of scrambled eggs, you can have them with a choice of toast, baked beans and sausage if bacon is not for you. Feeling fancy? You can have your eggs with a side of smoked salmon, toast and baked beans.

Need a tall glass of hot chocolate to go with those eggs? Unfortunately Idris Elba is not on our menu, but we do have available a creamy mix of rich chocolate and fresh milk. If you would rather have some tea, we have got all the (organic) teas.

For our smoothie junkies, we have a wonderful selection of fruit blends that will definitely hit your sweet spot. We also have plain old orange juice and pineapple juice for those who want their daily dose of vitamin C without the fuss of a smoothie.

WICH kind of person are you? Whatever your answer to this question may be, we have just the sandWICH for you!

If there is anything we have learnt over the years, it is that it is never too early for some cake. We encourage you to polish off breakfast with our strawberry, vanilla or chocolate cupcakes. We also do have available cheese cake, red velvet cake and vanilla sponge cake to go with our wide variety of coffee blends.

We really should tell you about our cream cheese and plain bagels but how about you try them for yourself (and don’t forget to get back to us on how they changed your life).

Stop swallowing so hard and continue this mouth-watering tale by checking out our full menu on www.bourbonhousecafe.com.gh

Cocktails and Coffee – What We Needed and Never Knew We Wanted

It was a hot Tuesday afternoon and Akua’s disregard for time had invariably turned our brunch date into a lunch date. With Akua’s indecisiveness we were probably going to spend another half hour deciding on where to go. After scouting the A&C Mall, we finally decided on Bourbon House Café. It looked warm and inviting and seemed like the perfect place to catch up with my friend Akua over a cup of coffee.

I digress, but it’s extremely important to tell you about this thing Akua and I do. Whenever we go into an establishment we dare each other to ask for the most unlikely thing that establishment would have and enjoy the confused look on the faces of whoever is attending to us. This never gets old and cracks us up every single time. One of my favourite memories of us together is when we walked into a perfume store and asked for a bottle of Moscato. The poor sales girl was so confused and brought us a bottle of Moschino perfume. We have never laughed so hard.  You get the picture now.

Our Modus Operandi was going to be no different today. We seated ourselves at a table and before the waiter had a chance to hand us a menu, Akua ordered a long island and I ordered a mojito. We were waiting for our waiter to look clueless but he just nodded and left. If this waiter is anything like us, he probably split a rib laughing – our expressions showed our utter confusion. We were in a café, a coffee shop or so we thought! Our drinks arrived looking as delicious as they tasted. Don’t judge us for day drinking. You know what they say, too much of anything is bad but too many cocktails are just right.

Six perfect cocktails between us and a year’s worth of catching up, later, we came to the conclusion that a cocktail afternoon was what we indeed needed but never knew we wanted. On hindsight, the name of the café should have clued us in. Alcohol and coffee in one location? YES PLEASE!

We’ll definitely be back and perhaps this time have that coffee date we actually planned.

Looking for a Coffee House in Labone? Well here is a Satisfying Formula.

Not many things are as frustrating and perhaps even torturous, as working your way tediously through a Math problem and realizing — usually when you have the answer or rather a variable of what the correct answer should actually be — that you may have taken a wrong turn along the route of your calculation. If this happens during a non-formally regulated study period, then you may be able to get some assistance to help you arrive at the desired mathematical destination.

While you don’t need to be Professor Allotey to find a desired destination through unfamiliar routes, getting lost because you took a wrong turn can evoke a similar frustration as what happens when you err in the steps of a mathematical calculation. This may especially be true if you are in a hurry. Both a tour guide and a teaching assistant offer guidance through new areas so one can arrive at a set destination.
If you are new to Labone (or anywhere close to it) or just generally unfamiliar with the area, then you can think of me as a special tour guide or even a teaching assistant, if you will.

When you move to a new area, beside recharge card vendors and grocery stores, you would want to have a café or eatery that fits snugly with your routine like a school prefect’s socks. And this is where I come in. Behold, I present to you Labone’s finest coffee house – Bourbon House Café. Not only do they make the best coffee, they have the finest pastries, excellent service and they are easy to locate!
Bourbon House Café offers a soothing ambiance in an ideal location. This makes it pivotally useful when it comes to finding a space where you can shuffle through your thoughts, plan out your day and get some light work done (thanks to their fast and free WiFi), all while enjoying the best mug of coffee there is.

Maybe, you have not moved to Labone in residential terms. Maybe, you have just got a new job in the area. That works too. In fact, considering how much time we spend in our offices, you might want to consider — and rightly so — Bourbon House Café as your home away from home. Not only can you enjoy a hearty breakfast featuring amazing coffee, you can also treat yourself to sinfully delicious and affordable lunch!

Bourbon House Café also gives you the option of making reservations ahead of time. Talk about convenience! You can go to the link below to make your reservation:

If you are looking for the perfect café in Labone, then Bourbon House Café is the place. A more satisfying formula (pun very intended) than this, there is not! I assure you.

Ghana Jollof is Lit!

Jollof rice is a West African tomato-based rice dish named after the Wolof people of Senegambia. Though its origins are indisputably Senegambian, today, jollof is claimed by most of West Africa, each country adding a twist of its own to the already delectable recipe. Notable African countries which vociferously claim ownership of this finger-licking dish are Ghana and Nigeria. Any person even vaguely familiar with internet speak and social media trends must have come across the famous #jollofwars.

Jollof has become the centre of an internet war with no certain beginning and no impending end, where predominantly Ghanaians and Nigerians battle it out on the World Wide Web, the weapons of wit and humour amply stocked in their arsenals, over whose recipe tastes best.

Clearly, when it comes to the cooking of jollof, as with many other things, the most important thing is not who started it, but who has made the best out of it. The Senegambian region may boast its invention, for which the rest of foodie West Africa is eternally grateful, but when it comes to who has constructed its legacy, Nigeria is the obvious first runner-up, with Ghana lifting the trophy. Jollof wars may yet be over, but as we say here in Ghana, “Agorɔ bɛsɔ a, na efiri anɔpa!”

Imagine you are in Ghana, Accra to be specific, and itching for a taste of that world-famous Ghana jollof. You need a place which combines the spicy essence of Ghanaian cooking, with a flavourful twist, then Bourbon House Café is your best bet! Try their Ghana jollof with mouth-watering jerk chicken; as hot as it is delicious. Or if high levels of kpakpo shito is more heat than your tongue can handle, but you still need that spicy kick, then try their Ghana Jollof and chicken satay. If for you, jollof is no jollof without the standard healthy serving of goat meat, then once again, Bourbon House Café has got you covered. Or perhaps you want to stick to regular Ghana jollof and grilled chicken? Look no further! If perhaps jollof and fish is your go-to, then Bourbon House café’s Jollof and fish filet was made just for you. Bourbon house café has the best Ghana jollof, with an equally yummy array of accompaniments.

Whatever you choose, Bourbon House Café is the perfect place to go to prove to anyone from, Antarctica to Nigeria and back, that Jollof is lit, and oh yes, Ghana has won this war.
